Autism Treatment – Probiotics Part 3 by Dr. Kurt Woeller
Probiotics can serve many purposes so in this video series I am covering which probiotics help with which issues. Some probiotics are helpful with yeast overgrowth, one type that is effective is called saccharomyces boulardii. Saccharomyces boulardii is a form of yeast that fights other yeasts so it is considered an anti-yeast yeast. Attacking candida is what this probiotic can do. But in addition, saccharomyces boulardii can also be effective at fighting a common bacteria that children with Autism often times have, known as clostridia. Clostridia bacteria can produce toxins that many children with Autism are very sensitive to. So saccharomyces boulardii serves as a probiotic treatment option to fight yeast and also as a probiotic treatment option to fight clostridia bacteria. One thing to be aware of though is that since saccharomyces boulardii is a probiotic yeast, it is also susceptible to anti-fungal treatments as well. So, if you are using prescriptions like Nystatin or Diflucan or natural remedies like grapefruit seed extract or oregano oil, it is best to separate them from this probiotic by at least two hours. One easy way to manage any interaction is to give saccharomyces boulardii probiotic at bedtime,.
Another form of probiotic that is very well recognized in the Autism community is a probiotic called Threelac. Threelac is made up of three different types of bacteria. Threelac, in my opinion, could be classified as a treatment specific probiotic used to treat a yeast overgrowth problem. A child suffering from yeast overgrowth in the digestive tract could find relief in the use of the probiotic Threelac. An even more powerful treatment option could be to use both probiotics, Threelac and saccharomyces boulardii, together. And while they fight yeast specifically, as treatment specific probiotics, they are not meant for use as long therapies. You would use these probiotics for specific time periods, with breaks taken at different intervals. For example, the probiotic saccharomyces boulardii, in my experience, can be used for three to six weeks and then a break of a couple of weeks can be introduced as needed. The probiotic saccharomyces boulardii does not colonize in the digestive tract so when you cease treatment, it will go away. I generally see the probiotic Threelac being used for a month to three months. Longer use than 90 days straight, I would recommend taking a break of about a week or so. For underlying yeast and bacterial issues, the probiotics Threelac and saccharomyces boulardii can be very effective remedies.

Tommy $5.86 Tommy had the dubious distinction of being the first-ever rock opera; however, it’s none the worse for that, Ken Russell’s adaptation notwithstanding. Due largely to Pete Townshend’s skill as a songwriter and composer, Tommy tells a coherent story and includes quality rock and roll at the same time, an impressive feat by itself. While surprisingly more linear than the later Quadrophenia, Tommy boa… |

Change of Habit $8.35 Elvis tried something different in his final narrative movie… but the results are oddly similar to his usual ’60s formula. Here the King plays a doctor working in an inner-city free clinic, playing host to three Catholic nurses (who are really nuns incognito). Elvis gets hung up on one of the nuns, played by Mary Tyler Moore; she seems a lot closer to The Dick Van Dyke Show than the Vatican. … |

Alice in Wonderland (Walt Disney Masterpiece Collection) [VHS] $4.18 Imaginatively rendered but slightly chilly, this 1951 Disney adaptation of the Lewis Carroll classic is also appropriately surreal. Alice (voiced by Kathryn Beaumont) has all the anticipated experiences: shrinking and growing, meeting the White Rabbit, having tea with the Mad Hatter, etc. Characterization is very strong, and the Disney team worked hard to bring screen personality to Carroll’s ecce… |

Oliver & Company [VHS] $2.94 Disney does Dickens in this animated version of Oliver Twist, in which a homeless New York City cat falls in with a bunch of mischievous dogs under the leadership of the appealing scoundrel Fagin. The roots of Disney’s success with animation in the ’90s begins with this clever, energetic, atmospheric movie, which succeeds in capturing the grim world Dickens conjured. Lyricist Howard Ashman (The Li… |

Temple Grandin $10.33 It doesn’t take long to see that Temple Grandin, the main character in this eponymous HBO movie, is, well, different–she (in the person of Claire Danes, who plays her) tells us before the credits start that she’s “not like other people.” But “different” is not “less.” Indeed, Grandin, who is now in her 60s, has accomplished a good deal more than a great many “normal” folks, let alone others affli… |
